Atlantic splendours and historic cities

Based in colourful Nazare, a lively resort and one of Portugal's most important fishing ports, this holiday includes a visit to the fascinating Portuguese capital. A programme of optional excursions gives you chances to visit the classic beach resort at Figueira, the ancient university town of Coimbra, elegant Estoril and UNESCO-listed Sintra, as well as ancient Obidos and the fabled shrine at Fatima.

The former fishing village of Nazare has grown to become one of the most popular resorts on the Atlantic coast. A maze of narrow streets leads down to the cafe-lined seafront Avenida da Republica and the sweeping beach on which fishermen's wives still tend nets by hand amongst the sunbathers

Day One

Fly to Portugal and transfer to your hotel (approximately one hour 30 minutes from Lisbon and two hours 30 minutes from Oporto).

Day Two

Enjoy the hotel and its surrounds, and perhaps join the optional, half-day, guided tour of Nazare, which will include a walking tour and a journey on the funicular railway to the top of the Sitio promontory above the resort.

Day Three

Join us today as we explore the wonderful Portuguese capital Lisbon on today's included excursion. See the extraordinary Manueline architecture of the Belem quarter, and the grid of wide avenues, fringed with striking modern buildings, that makes up the Baixa. Stroll the narrow streets of the Alfama, and perhaps climb aboard one of the city's famous trams.

Day Four

Today offers the opportunity to explore Beira Litoral, the coastal part of region at the heart of Portugal with its spectacular beaches and its historic cities and towns further inland, on an optional excursion. Visit the coast's only major resort, Figueira da Foz, as well as the renowned 'Oxford of Portugal', the ancient former capital and university city of Coimbra.

Day Five

Another day left free for you to explore the resort and its surrounds.

Day Six

This morning board the coach for the optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. Verdant Sintra is the former retreat of the Portuguese Royal Family, and its lofty perch offers views out over the surrounding National Park that are simply stunning. Cascais is a bustling resort of fashionable bars centred on an unspoilt 'old-town' centre. Explore, before continuing to fashionable Estoril, the most sparkling gem on this popular coast.

Day Seven

Today's optional excursion takes you, first, to the immaculate walled hill-top village of Obidos, an oasis of medieval charm and colour that was once perched above the sea, but is now marooned inland. After time to explore, head for the peace and tranquillity of the the fabled shrine at Fatima - one of the world's most important Christian pilgrimage centres.

Day Eight

Transfer back to the airport for check-in and your flight home.
