City Information

The historic, bustling county town of Sligo, forever associated with its most famous sons, William and Jack Butler Yeats, is a perfect base from which to enjoy the delights of the surrounding countryside. A lively centre of traditional music played in the North Connacht style, the town boasts countless pubs and bars. The Yeats Memorial Building commemorates the poet, while the glorious Model Arts Centre, one of Ireland's finest galleries, features works by his artist brother.

Itinerary

Day One

Fly to Belfast and transfer to Sligo (approximately three hours). The rest of the day you're free to relax in the hotel or to venture into town, perhaps to enjoy a first evening of traditional entertainment.

Day Two

On today's half-day optional excursion you'll "arise and go now, and go to Innisfree", the idyllic island in the middle of Lough Gill that was the subject of Yeats' most famous work. Board a lake steamer for a short cruise from the historic shore-side Parke's Castle before visiting Glencar Lake where the famous waterfall cascades some 50 feet into the waters below.

Day Three

Another fascinating optional excursion takes you west across glorious County Mayo, today. After a stop at the celebrated Woollen Mills at Foxford, you'll head to delightful Westport on beautiful Clew Bay.

Stroll around the harbour to the fascinating Heritage Centre (entrance payable locally) or head for a pint in Matt Molloy's, the local pub owned by a member of the famous Chieftains traditional Irish band.

A short drive from Westport brings you to the slopes of Croagh Patrick, Ireland's 'holy mountain', from beneath which St Patrick was said to have driven the snakes out of Ireland. You'll return to Sligo at the end of a truly fascinating day.

Day Four

Our final, included, visit takes us to vibrant, colourful Galway City, picturesquely situated on the north-eastern end of the Bay. After a guided tour, you'll be free to explore the city under your own steam, perhaps taking the opportunity to enjoy lunch in one of Galway's countless restaurants, bars or cafes.

This afternoon, you'll make the scenic return journey to Sligo through the glorious countryside of mystic Connemara, home to the wild, white ponies and a stunning landscape of loughs and mountains where the sparse population still speaks the Irish language and preserves the ancient Gaelic culture.

Day Five

Transfer back to Belfast, and check-in for your flight home.
